Older conventional diesel engines have an engine driven injector pump and individual injectors on each cylinder. The pump sends a set amount of fuel to each injector via individual lines according to engine speed. Often used in tractors, power generators and light commercial vehicles.

Common Rail Injection varies from the Conventional System, in that pressure generation and injection are separated, enabling fuel to be constantly available at the required pressure for injection. These systems have a modular design, consisting of a high pressure pump, series of injectors, a rail and electronic control unit. This type of injection unit offers high engine power, smooth running and low consumption and emissions.
